Abstract

Crustaceans are a highly economically valuable aquatic resource with important contributions to aquatic ecology, food security, and international trade. However, crustacean catches, especially penaeid shrimp, show high variability due to habitat degradation, catch pressure, and environmental changes. This condition is driving a shift from the exploitation of natural stocks to cultivation as a strategy to ensure the availability of supply and meet the growing demands of the global market. This article presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of scientific publications for the period 2015–2025, with reference to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Data were obtained from international databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar) as well as additional literature from regional organizations (FAO, SEAFDEC, KKP). The results of the survey revealed that: (1) the diversity of crustaceans in the tropics is still high but the catch is unstable; (2) penaeid shrimp is the main commodity that has undergone a significant shift from capture to cultivation; (3) non-antibiotic strategies such as probiotics, biofloc, phytotherapy, and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) have been proven to support shrimp health and reduce environmental impacts. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating aspects of biodiversity, aquaculture technology, and ecosystem approaches in the development of sustainable penaeid shrimp aquaculture.
