The Influence of Peer Group Relationships on Cyberbullying, With Empathy as A Mediating Variable in Generation Z

Cyberbullying behavior is one of the psychosocial problems that is increasing along with the intensity of digital media use in Generation Z. This study aims to analyze the influence of peer group relationships on cyberbullying with empathy as a mediator variable in Generation Z. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research subjects were 382 Generation Z respondents selected using quantitative sampling techniques. Data were collected using a peer group relationship scale, an empathy scale, and a cyberbullying scale that have met validity and reliability tests. Data analysis was carried out using path analysis. The results showed that peer group relationships have a significant effect on cyberbullying and empathy, and empathy has a significant effect on cyberbullying. In addition, empathy has been shown to act as a mediator variable in the relationship between peer group relationships and cyberbullying. These findings indicate that the quality of peer relationships and empathic abilities have an important role in suppressing cyberbullying behavior in Generation Z. This study recommends strengthening positive peer relationships and developing empathy as part of a strategy to prevent cyberbullying among adolescents.
