Abstract

Access to safe drinking water remains a critical global challenge, exacerbated by population growth, industrialization, and climate change. Solar-powered water treatment systems offer a sustainable alternative by harnessing renewable solar energy to drive purification processes, including distillation, reverse osmosis, and photocatalysis. This paper reviews the principles, applications, performance evaluations, future prospects, and challenges of solar-powered water treatment technologies. Key findings indicate that these systems can effectively remove chemical contaminants and pathogens while reducing dependency on conventional electricity. However, limitations such as intermittent solar availability, high initial costs, and maintenance requirements pose challenges to widespread adoption. Future innovations—including nanomaterials, hybrid renewable energy integration, and IoT-based monitoring—can enhance efficiency, scalability, and sustainability. The study concludes that solar-powered water treatment represents a viable and environmentally friendly strategy for ensuring clean water access globally.
